Why these 60 words?
A small set of words, like I, want, more, no, go, that, all done, makes up a large share of what we say every day. This is called core vocabulary. With it you can request, refuse, comment, ask and greet anywhere, not just ask for objects.
The selection follows the same base as the falatheo app: pronouns, verbs, describing and feeling words, little words for place and time, questions and social words. Each word has a fixed spot, which helps the person find it faster over time. So if you adapt the board, avoid moving words around.
How to use it every day
- Keep it within reach. Laminate it or use a clear sleeve. A board in a drawer helps nobody.
- Point while you talk. As you talk to the person, point to the words on the board. That is how they learn where each word is (modeling).
- Wait. After asking, count to ten silently and give time for an answer.
- Accept every form. Pointing, gaze, gestures, sounds or speech: it is all communication.
- Don't test. The board is for conversation, not for quizzes.

Boards in public spaces: Brazilian Law 15.249/2025
Brazil's Law 15.249 of November 3, 2025 (in Portuguese) amended Law 10.098/2000 and the Brazilian Inclusion Law to provide for low-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication resources, such as pictogram boards, in public and publicly accessible spaces: schools, health units, squares, museums.
This board can be a starting point for schools, health units and city halls. Check your local regulations and, whenever possible, ask a speech therapist to review and adapt the vocabulary to the place.
The pictures are system emoji and may look slightly different depending on the computer or phone used to print.
