What it is for

Someone intubated, with a tracheostomy or too weak to speak still has things to say: where it hurts, how much, whether they are thirsty, whether they want their family. This board holds the same words as the “Hospital / ICU” folder in the falatheo app, laid out so the person can point with a finger or their eyes and the team can ask without guessing.

How to use it, in three steps

  1. Fix the sheet where the person can reach it or hold it in front of them; laminate it so it can be cleaned.
  2. Ask one thing at a time (“Where does it hurt?”) and point to the right row; if the person cannot move a hand, you point and wait for a yes with the eyes or head.
  3. Say the chosen word aloud to confirm before acting: “Belly pain, level 7. I will call the nurse.”

The pictures are system emoji and may look slightly different depending on the computer or phone used to print. Word positions follow the falatheo app, so the paper board and the app match.

The same words, with a voice

falatheo is a free AAC app, with no ads and 100% offline. Tap the words and the phone or tablet speaks them.
