Communication board for the doctor’s office

Waiting room, appointment, dentist, vaccine: saying what you feel, where it hurts, asking for a break and asking “will it hurt?” and “how much longer?”.

Opens a page ready to print or save as PDF. Print, copy and hand it out freely, at no cost.

Board preview: answers & requests in pink, people in yellow, feelings in blue, body in teal, actions in green, time & questions in gray.

What it is for

Appointments, dentist, tests, vaccines: new places, new people and a lot of waiting. This board gives the person a way to say they are scared, ask for a break, show where it hurts and ask what will happen, and gives the professional a way to explain by pointing. It works in a family’s bag and at the front desk of clinics and health centres.

How to use it, in three steps

  1. Before going in, show the board and point to what will happen: “first wait, then the doctor, then home”.
  2. During the visit, ask by pointing (“does it hurt here?”, “want a break?”) and wait; accept pointing, gaze or a gesture.
  3. Agree on a signal for “wait” and honour it: someone who knows they can ask for a break cooperates more.
